More about Tiger Leaping Gorge

The tributary of the Jinshajiang River is flowing into the gorge with surging wave and it looks very grand. Legends say that there was a fierce tiger jumping over the huge stone in ancient times, so the name of the Tiger Jumping Gorge comes. It has the title of the biggest gorge in the world. Lying between the Haba Snow Mountains and the Yulong Snow Mountains the gorge, in which the Jinsha (Yangtze) River pounds furiously at its rocky shores in an awesome fashion, sending up skyfuls of white froth, is (still) a dream place for adventurers.

Although Tiger Leaping Gorge is an essential part of the World Heritage protected "Three Parallel Rivers of Yunnan", the Chinese government has floated proposals for a hydroelectric dam on the Jinsha River since 2004. However, according to the South China Morning Post on 21 Dec 2007, the Yunnan provincial government has scrapped this project.
