St. Casimir of Warsaw

Church of St. Casimir in the city of Warsaw (Warszawa), district of New Town. This Baroque church was designed by renowned architect Tylman of Gameren, and was built between 1688-1692 by John III Sobieski and his wife Maria Kazimiera. Like the Church of the Transfiguration on Miodowa Street, it was established as a thanksgiving for victory at the Battle of Vienna. During the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, it was a rebel hospital and a shelter for the civilian population. As a result of targetted bombing, hundreds of people were killed by falling rubble. The temple was rebuilt from its own ruins in the 1950s; worth seeing in the 18th-century pulpit, organ, bells, and a tomb of Princess Caroline of Sobieski de Bouillion from 1746.
