Thessaloniki
Thessaloniki is the second to Athens city on greek territory with around 1300000 inhabitans in the metropolitan area. The city is very old and wrapped in many historic layers through a period of more than 2000 years with Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantines,West midieval and Ottoman traces laid on every single corner together with an Aegean Sea caress that often ceases to be tender and affectionate and transforms to hursh under north winds..as shown in the picture.
The White Tower on the waterfront, an Ottoman reconstruction of the 12th century of another old Byzantine fortification on the wall protecting the city remains as an emblem turned to a museum.During the period of Ottoman rule, the White Tower became a notorious prison and scene of mass executions...Thessaloniki has also been badly affected by modrn time constructors not hesitating to sacrifice wonderful past architectural quarters exploiting profit. An Old Town quarter still struggles to survive offering some releif to traffic and noise...
Vardaris is the famous strong north wind that brings frozen currents to the city but is also very welcomed because it clears any smog hanging over...
