Niel Gow's Oak

Shortly after the reforestation area we came to a special place on the River Tay, the oak tree of Niel Gow, a gifted and famous violin player from the nearby village of Inver. We took a very short break and Gordon explained to me the importance of this place. Niel Gow is said to have enjoyed sitting here and playing the fiddle while the Tay moved steadily past him. After taking the picture, we resumed our hike and I followed Gordon, who walked briskly along the path through the forest, always along the west bank of the Tay.

"Niel Gow's second wife, to whom the lament is dedicated, was Margaret Urquhart of Perth; they were married for more than thirty years. Niel Gow's Lament for the Death of His Second Wife, performed by Laura Risk as part of the Voices of Music "Musical Crossroads" concert, January, 2019. One of Niel Gow's finest compositions. This performance echoes the portrait of Niel and his brother, Donald, by David Allan which is in the National Gallery in Scotland. In this painting, Niel is accompanied by his brother on the cello. Both players are using short bows of the earlier type, the violin rests on on the shoulder with no chin rest, and the cello is supported by the legs with no endpin. Both the cello and the violin are in 18th century setup which produces a more transparent sound; note the short fingerboards on both instruments. The first time 'round, the musicians play the tune with just cello and violin, as it is in the painting, on the return the full ensemble improvises an accompaniment. Because of the improvisation, each performance is unique."


Niel Gow's Eiche

Kurz nach dem Aufforstungsgebiet kamen wir am Fluss Tay zu einer besonderen Stelle, zu der Eiche von Niel Gow, einem begnadeten und berühmten Geigenspieler aus dem nahegelegenen Dorf Inver. Wir legten eine ganz kurze Rast ein und Gordon erleuterte mir die Bedeutung dieses Ortes. Hier soll Niel Gow gerne gesessen und auf der Fiedel gespielt haben, während der Tay stetig an ihm vorbei zog. Nach der Aufnahme namen wir unsere Wanderung wieder auf und ich folgte Gordon, der mit flottem Schritt den Pfad durch den Wald, immer am Westufer des Tay entlang, entlang ging.

„Niel Gows zweite Frau, der die Klage gewidmet ist, war Margaret Urquhart aus Perth; sie waren mehr als dreißig Jahre verheiratet. "Scottish fiddle player Paul Anderson, performing a series of Neil Gow compositions, "The Stool of Repentance", "Miss Stewart of Grantully", "Highland Whisky" and "Miss Drummond of Perth" For this special performance, Paul was given permission to perform using Neil Gow's own fiddle. This was part of Paul's 'Music of the Masters' concert on Tuesday 29th January during the 2020 Celtic Connections music festival. The concert was a rare opportunity for Paul to perform music by iconic Scottish fiddlers, played on the composer's' own rare violins, accompanied by world class multi-instrumentalist, Brian 'Beard' McAlpine on piano."
